Infection - (Similar to Strangles).
The Dept of Veterinary Clinical Science and Animal
Husbandry at Liverpool University have confirmed that
Cleavesty does NOT have a case of Strangles.
A horse at Cleavesty showed symptoms very similar to
Strangles. We have now received the full vet report and
it has stated that the horse in question has - "ACUTE
RESPIRATORY INFECTION". The infection
is NOT CONFIRMED AS STRANGLES.
The vet report will be scanned and
made available on this site.
As a precaution, full management protocols were put in
place to ensure that the infection is contained.
As a responsible competition yard, all movement of ALL
of our horses has been ceased immediately (this includes
hacking locally). The infected horse has been isolated
and has received the best veterinary treatment (and is
now showing marked improvement). No other horses on the
yard are currently showing any symptoms.
Unfortunately, dressage competitions will be ceased until
the yard is given the all-clear (which we hope will be
Friday of this week). If anyone, who has visited the centre
recently, has any concerns, please don't hesitate to call.
All others externally, who have come into contact with
our horses have been notified.
This page will be updated to keep everyone informed of
progress.
Progress
Day 1
Veterinary advice is that once the infected horse has
been isolated (which was Thursday 17th May), the yard
is clear if there have been no further confirmed cases
for an uninterrupted period of 14 days. The temperatures
of all the other horses are taken twice daily. Any spike
in temperature or any horse which goes off its feed will
be considered as a new case, at which point the 14 day
period begins again.
Day 4
All horses are eating well and temparatures fall within
the normal range. Confirmation has been received today
from the veterinary hospital that treated the sick horse
that the infection is NOT and is unrelated to Strangles.
A further test swab was taken today. If that proves clear
(results expected Friday of this week), Cleavesty is considered
to be clear.
